The daughter of comedian Groucho Marx was once deniedadmittance to an exclusive country club swimming pool with herfriends because she and her family were not members. Realizingwhat had happened, embarrassed officials sent the Marx family anapology and an application to join. Groucho declined theinvitation with the comment, "I wouldn't want to belong to anyclub that would have me as a member."
Someone still tried to smooth over the incident bypersuading the comedian to allow an application to be submittedfor membership. The country club was embarrassed further whenthe application was denied.
